The vast majority of people dream at night yet we still have no consensus on

I figure my goal with this page is write down my thoughts about dreams and also summarize other people's theories and ideas into to something somewhat easily digestable. I don't know what I'll find investigating dreams, but I sure hope it's good!

Threat Rehearsal

The Role of Dreams in the Evolution of the Human Mind

The case for threat rehearsal states that dreams were evolutionarily chosen because they allow preparation for intense and life threatening events. I have a few problems with this,

  1. Wouldn't most dreams then be what a nightmare is?
  2. Why would the dream then easily be forgotten?
  3. What about all the dreams that aren't this?

Most dreams I have usually don't contain a strong danger, or anything particularly dangerous. There is conflict in most dreams—something that usually creates tension—but usually nothing that could be considered a “threat”. One dream I can see fitting into this is theory being chased. It’s a common dream and it is obvious how it could fit into the evolution of man. But this creates another problem, why do we forget our dreams so easily? Consciously knowing what to do in a situation like this is what would be useful about this mock threat situation, and yet usually forget our nightmares pretty soon after.
